Buddy Bears for Children launched by Kenilworth’s SNT

An innovative new scheme is being launched that can support children in times of distress or emergency. It’s all down to the ladies of the Knitting Group of St Barnabus Church, Kenilworth and Police Community Support Officer Rachael Clayton who is part of Warwickshire Police’s Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) for Kenilworth.

The Knitting Group at St Barnabus’s Church, who have done lots for various good causes over several years, contacted Kenilworth’s SNT and asked if they would like some knitted teddy bears to give out to children, after hearing that other police forces have a similar scheme, but that Warwickshire do not yet benefit from this. PSCO Rachael Clayton discussed and accepted the kind offer and the ladies have been busy knitting “Buddy Bears” .

It’s a simple idea that could make all the difference to a child. Over the next few weeks, PCSO Clayton will be talking to a selection of police officers in South Warwickshire about helping pilot a scheme and making Buddy Bears available to them. The idea is that Buddy Bears will go on shift with officers who respond to incidents. A Buddy Bear can be offered where an officer thinks it might be helpful at an event they may be dealing, with to provide some comfort or distraction to a child. This also helps to create some common ground between the police and child, in the event that a police officer has to visit them on more than one occasion.

“It’s wonderful that the group at St Barnabus have made this offer and have already knitted us twenty Buddy Bears as a start. This scheme could make all the difference to a child, and it’s great that some officers in Warwickshire Police, who are synonymous with the Warwickshire Bear that’s on their cap badge, are going to pilot this scheme” said PSCO Clayton.

PC Marie Holt, one of the Beat Managers for Kenilworth SNT, said: “We have a great community in Kenilworth. This kind offer and Rachael’s engagement with the group at St Barnabus shows how policing, and the community can come together to help one another and make a real difference”.

Ring Doorbells & CCTV Sign Up >50

We are pleased to report that in just over a week already 35 Kenilworth residents have joined Kenilworth’s new CCTV register that’s designed to help police quickly identify where any CCTV is situated should they need to investigate an incident.

The register, which does NOT involve any live access to householders private CCTV, also covers ‘RING” doorbells as these devices also provide very effective CCTV. Kenilworth Watch, who launched the CCTV Register scheme after seeing a successful scheme in nearby Finham, Coventry, are appealing to people who might not have yet registered to do so and for householders that have CCTV doorbells to also register.

A spokesperson for Kenilworth Watch said “We have been overwhelmed by the speed as which so many residents from across Kenilworth have signed up to the CCTV register so far. It shows there is a real great community spirit in our town. With 35 properties already registered we’d love to get the number to at least over 50 properties because that’s such a message about Kenilworth that will help drive crime prevention and encourage offenders miss out our town and go elsewhere.”

“We love to hear from people who have not yet got round to registering and also from householders who have “RING” type doorbells that record people approaching the door, it’s CCTV and it would be great to have it on the register.”

“All we need for residents to register is their name, address, email and ideally their telephone number and that’s it.” the spokesperson added.

Often CCTV images can help the police track or discover a wider level of activity by offenders. The Finham scheme has been successful in this respect. When several residents, who were signed up to the CCTV register, all provided images of persons approaching their property what resident’s thought were individual events were pieced together by police who then had evidence that the area was being targeted. Consequently, offenders were duly caught and prosecuted.

Kenilworth Camera Scheme hits over 25 in first week

KENILWORTH HOUSEHOLDERS are being praised for getting behind an innovative new scheme that aims to help residents and their local police prevent crime but also help detect crime more efficiently. In the first week of a new CCTV registration scheme over 25 Kenilworth householders who have CCTV have signed up.

The CCTV register works by using online mapping which enables Kenilworth Watch to review where any CCTV is situated in relation to the location of an incident.

“The CCTV register saves our police service hours and hours of trying to look and find out where any CCTV is located. The more residents that join the CCTV register the more we can help save hours of police time locating CCTV.” a Kenilworth Watch spokesperson said.

The system, which has been developed specifically for Kenilworth, is unique across Warwickshire. All householders data is secure, meets GDPR regulations and there is no direct access to householders CCTV involved.

“We are really pleased that in less than a week we already have over 25 households from all over parts of our town signed up to the register. What we’d like is to get all CCTV signed up so we can provide the best possible service to support our police teams and also send out a message to criminals that coming to Kenilworth is a bad idea because we are a united as a community when it comes to preventing and detecting crime.

We’d encourage anyone that has CCTV and who has only just heard of the scheme or who has yet to register to do so now.” a Kenilworth Watch spokesperson added.
