The two further thefts from vehicles (detailed below) are just the latest and illustrate the ongoing problem that residents of Kenilworth face as valuable items are left in unattended motor vehicles. It is clear that these types of crime are becoming persistent and frequent in and around the town.
Crown Watch have appealed previously and Kenilworth’s Safer Neighbourhood Team have highlighted the need several times for residents to take responsibility and not to leave anything of value in motor vehicles, even when parked at home addresses and on private drives.
Despite these efforts much of the community does not engage with Neighbourhood Watch and consequently it is unconsciously building a ‘rich pickings’ reputation for Kenilworth with opportunist criminals. Preventing crime, particularly the theft of personal property, starts with the person it belongs to taking responsibility, it is not a matter “for the police” to wholly resolve.
It’s pretty simple to understand; Around 50% of vehicles in Kenilworth where thefts have occurred have been left unlocked by the owners and where laptops, golf clubs, iphones and blackberry smartphones, purses and briefcases have been left in vehicles, locked or unlocked, they have gone with smashed and damaged vehicles to boot.
Whilst we as a community fail to address our behaviour with vehicle security and valuables we can expect further and frequent visits from criminals to an area they seemingly and increasingly consider as ‘easy’ and ‘worthwhile’ when it comes to commiting crime.
