KENILWORTH residents are being advised to remain vigilant when receiving text messages, emails or phone call that suggest it is their bank calling after an attempted fraud took place earlier this week (3 – 8 June 2024) that could have resulted in the theft of funds from bank accounts.
Warwickshire Police have reiterated that banks and building societies do not routinely call or contact customers unless the customer themselves has initiated an interaction with the bank/building society.
The advice comes following an attempted fraud in the Fieldgate Lane area of Kenilworth.
The victim received text message suggesting “BARCLAYS BANK: 03/06/2024 ARGOS £743. REPLY TO COMFIRM CALL US ON (it was a mobile telephone number) IF YOU DID NOT REQUEST THIS”
The victim called the number and was told by a well spoken male to place their mobile phone sim card, Barclays Bank card and debit card reader into a closed envelope and place it under their front door mat – the victim did this between 2300hrs and 2359hrs on an evening earlier this week.
Within five minutes the envelope placed outside had been taken, at which point the victim realised something was wrong. Thankfully, the victim immediately contacted their bank and stopped/cancelled the bank cards before any transactions/withdrawals had been made from their account.
Residents are reminded to ensure that when speaking with anyone not to start divulging personal information of any type. If any call or message is received please DO NOT call a number given to you by the callerif it is not the public listed contact number for the bank or building society.
