Kenilworth Residents on the lookout after spate of Outbuilding Burglaries

Kenilworth residents are warned to keep a keen eye out for suspicious persons that show too much interest by loitering around and looking at property and buildings. The warning comes after three burglaries took place in different parts of the town in the last few days.

On Monday 23 February at approximately 20:50hrs a vehicle and garage was entered in Borrowell Lane, Kenilworth. Tools were stolen.

On Wednesday 25 February overnight entry was made to two outbuildings on a farm on the Birmingham Road, Kenilworth. Bolt cutters were used on the perimeter gates and locks to sheds. A machine welder and small set of ladders were taken.

Further, on Wednesday 25 February in the early evening. Entry was gained into two outbuildings on a farm off Dalehouse Lane, Kenilworth. A cooking stove and assorted tools were stolen. Information has also been given to the police suggesting that a silver Saab was seen parked in a drive way near the location of the incident.

Crown Watch would advise landowners and all residents with outbuildings to check they are secure and adequately protected from criminal attack. Equipment kept in such outbuildings needs to be out of site if possible and also locked/immobilise in addition.

If you have any information about these crimes then please contact Warwickshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Parcel Scam Warning for Kenilworth Residents

Kenilworth Residents are being warned about a “Postcard Scam” that involves a false message encouraging the recipient to telephone a number to collect a parcel the postcard suggests is being held for them.

The postcard advises there is a £10 fee (sometimes it can be a different amount) to be paid and this can be done by credit card. This is a complete scam and residents are warned not to fall for it.

Crown Watch advises:

  • Ignore the postcard
  • Do NOT telephone the number suggested
  • Do NOT provide credit/bank card details

Royal Mail and all main parcel delivery companies DO NOT require money to deliver a parcel or a payment ahead of you being told you can collect it.

Please take time to warn any vulnerable or elderly neighbour, friend or relation so they can protect themselves from being fooled by the criminals operating this scam.

ALERT: Bogus Police Officer Scam in nearby Leamington Spa Warning

Warwickshire Police is urging people to be alert following a series of phone scams, in which a bogus police officer calls to say that there is a problem with the victim’s bank card.

On Wednesday 4th February, bogus calls were made to three people in Leamington Spa from a man pretending to be a police officer from Scotland Yard. On each occasion, he told the victim that their bank card was being used by criminals in Birmingham. He asked the victims to call 999 in order to verify his identity, but he remained on the line so if they had attempted to ring 999 potential victims might have thought they had got through to the real 999 service and police as he would imitate it.

In previous instances these scammers have asked the victims to call their bank, but remained on the line again fooling victims into thinking they had got through to their bank and thus convincing them to hand over bank details. Fortunately in each of yesterday’s incidents, no one handed over any personal details.

Warwickshire Police is urging people to be vigilant to the scam, which is often targeted at elderly people.

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Paley said “We are continually urging people to be vigilant to the scam. Please remember:

  • Police officers, and banks never ask for account details or PINs over the phone.
  • Police officers, and banks never come around to your house to collect bank/credit cards or property.

We would encourage anyone with elderly relatives or friends to mention this and talk to them about this scam so they are aware and can be on their guard.

If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and call police on 101 using another telephone (because if the scammer does not put the phone down at their end they are still likely to be on the line when the receiver it picked back by the potential victim to make an outgoing call).

If you do not have a mobile or secondary phone then go to or alert a neighbour, friend or relative and ask to use their telephone.

Always be vigilant and ensure that when you pick up your phone to make a call check you can hear the normal dialling tone. If the line is silent or a voice speaks to you then the scammer is still present, don’t respond and replace the receiver.

If it’s an emergency please dial 999

Kenilworth Bogus Doorstep Caller Warning

Kenilworth Residents are being warned to look out for Doorstep Callers who claim to be from “The Water Board”. These callers are BOGUS and are intent in distracting you so they can get into your home and steal valuables, cash and any other belongings that take their fancy.

On Thursday 15 January 2015 there were two of these incidents in nearby RUGBY where males called at the homes of elderly residents, claiming to be from ‘the Water Board”. The males then asked the residents to turn off their stop cocks and, whilst the residents were distracted by doing this, the males entered the homes and stole items.

On Friday 16 January 2015 in nearby LEAMINGTON SPA, an elderly lady was conned out of a large sum of money on the pretense that her guttering needed cleaning out.

Warwickshire Police say that this type of “distraction burglary/rogue trader” activity usually starts around Springtime but this time the criminals are starting early.

If you live on your own and are in your senior years PLEASE take heed of this advice and warning. If you know someone, like your neighbour, who may be elderly or on their own please pop and see them and mention this without alarming them. Just make them aware and stress to them NOT to open the door.

Here are some further tips and advice;

  • Please remember that you do not have to answer the door to anyone you do not know, or are not expecting.
  • Staff from the water companies never refer to themselves as being from “the Water Board” and would never call at your door to ask you to turn off your water.
  • If anyone calls at your home claiming to be from the Water or Gas or Electricity Boards, do not answer the door, engage in converstation with them or let them into your home.

Please report their visit to Police, on 101, immediately.

Whilst all notices that Crown Watch post are important we’d like to stress the importance of this one in terms of getting everyone made aware of this menace and so enable them not to fall victim to what is one of the most despicable crimes which can have life changing effects upon elderly and vulnerable people.

Finally, as a further help we have added a leaflet produced by Severn Trent that deals with Bogus Caller issues and advises about what to do in more detail. Indeed, the Editor is featured on the front cover from his days working at Severn Trent!

2015 New Year Briefing

A Robbery as Kenilworth Shops targeted in New Year

It has not been a Happy New Year for Kenilworth shops as two major retail chains have been targeted in the past 10 days. A robbery took place very close to our Neighbourhood Watch area, at the Tesco Express store, Leyes Lane. At around 9.30pm on Thursday 8 January 2015 three white males entered the shop wearing balaclavas and hooded tops. They left with a what police described as ‘a significant amount of cash and cigarettes’. They made off in a turquoise mini and anyone that may have seen anything are asked to contact Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting Incident 331 of January 8th 2015.

The robbery took place only 3 days after a burglary at Sainsbury’s, Warwick Road, Kenilworth. Police were called to the store in the early hours of Monday 5th January 2015 as two men armed with crowbars and a holdall forced their way into the store and broke into five self service tills. They were described as wearing grey tracksuits and caps. One of the men was tall and slight, whilst the other was of a larger build. They made off on foot after it appears they were disturbed. Anyone that may have seen anything are asked to contact Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting Incident 21 of January 5th 2015.

Keep up to date with what’s going on in your neighbourhood

There are now a number of ways you can keep right up to date with what is going on in your neighbourhood and Kenilworth. We have worked hard at Crown Watch to make it as easy as possible by giving you as many channels of communication to enable you to make a choice as to the best one for you. For the past couple of years we have moved away from Newsletters as the main means of communication. Newsletters take a considerable amount of time to design and write, they are not a quick way to get information out and they also cost money to produce. From time to time we will still produce a general newsletter, like this one, to ensure we keep in contact particularly with those residents that don’t use or have access to the newer channels of communication.

You can now access Crown Watch on the web at; http://www.kenilworthnwatch.wordpress.com

Crime that affects us is not just burglaries these days.

As the last few weeks of 2014 drew to a close so things became hectic for some as they prepared to celebrate Christmas and New Year. It’s at these very ‘busy’ periods that people don’t seem to have as much time to stop and take stock of what maybe happening around them, or in the worst cases to them! There have been a significant number ‘Courier Scam” incidents, predominantly in the Stratford upon Avon area, in the run up to Christmas. Usually a caller on the telephone, pretending to be from the Metropolitan Police, has told the victim that they have someone in custody who has cloned and is using their bank card. They then ask the householder to contact their bank but, often unbeknown to the householder, remain on the line. You are advised that putting the receiver down at your end does not cancel the call, so if you then pick it back up to make that call to the bank the previous caller will still be there but make out that they are now your bank and convince you to provide your bank details. To complete the scam they then send a courier to collect your bank card. Once they have collected it they then use it to withdraw money from your account with the details you provided over the telephone. Fortunately the majority of victims have released this is a scam and have not handed any details over but it’s very easy to be fooled or confused by such calls.

Crown Watch advises some simple things to remember;

• NEVER provide Bank Details (Account Number & Sort Code) via Telephone or at the door.

• NEVER divulge personal information (Name & Date of Birth) about yourself to callers by telephone or at the door.

• ALWAYS make sure you have the dialling tone before dialling a phone number and if in doubt. Get a neighbour or your Neighbourhood Watch Co-Ordinator to help.

Please remember police officers, and banks will never ask for account details or PINs over the phone. They also would not come around to your house to collect your cards or property. DO NOT give any of your details to strangers.

Courier Scam Arrest Made

A 16yr old boy from Birmingham was arrested on Tuesday (6th January) and on Wednesday (7th January) charged with fraud in connection with an incident in Stratford on Monday 22nd December, in which an elderly lady was a victim of a “Courier scam, and handed over her bank details. She then gave her bank card to a courier, and the defendant used her card at a cash machine in Birmingham to obtain £400 from her account. The defendant has been released on conditional bail and is due to appear at Leamington Youth Court on Tuesday 27th January 2015.
